Final Fantasy inherently touches on politics and religion, and by proxy, so does writing. Understanding stories, understanding intention, is also an important part of that research. It's important that we research what we say and what we write. It's important that we try to correct our mistakes, viewpoints, and continuously try and grow beyond the artificial restrictions we place upon ourselves.

  In the beginning,   Fenris was born during a migratory stage amongst the Southern Clans when battle and strife visited their city and homes. His mother lived with her brother, his uncle; however, he was a supporter of the Southern rebellion and had gone to battle that week prior. As the caravan crossed the battlefield, Fenris' mother went into labor, and Fenris' body was given life and soul over a field of corpses.Upon that time, after birth was given, Fenris' mother scanned the battlefield of the thousands of bodies, and saw their houses banner impaled through her brother's body, hung upside down, where his corpse was strung up upon the hanging tree. They had lost the battle, it was evident by the slaughter, and the Northern Clan banners lining the road. They were being relocated to the North. They were being subjugated.Fenris' biological father was nowhere to be found, nowhere to be seen. Nobody knew his whereabouts. His mother, bearing grief for the loss of her brother, the destruction of her clan's house, and hatred for Fenris' biological father for not coming to her aid and leaving her, began to manifest into a form of psychosis. She began to take it out on Fenris and began to abuse alcohol. Her wrath knew no bounds; it was only just manifesting into the physical and psychological form.As Fenris grew older, he was starved, underweight, gangly, and tall like an uncanny monster, considered a freak of nature by his own mother, and now, his step-father, the fire of their wrath only grew into absolute torture and torment, for even the smallest thing. Fenris fought for scraps like a rabid animal. He had not been taught to read, speak, or write. The words he did know only brought him sorrow and were filled with vitriol. He was consistently locked outside in the weather, forced to live in the mud, the snow, the cold, frigid winds of the North. Whatever he was, to them, he was simultaneously nothing and a monstrous creature.He had never known a warm embrace; he had never known love or compassion until the village received a new family from the Southern Clans. The family's son approached Fenris, offering scraps of food, trying to help him stave off hunger. This was the first time Fenris had ever felt anything other than anger; he had witnessed compassion. That child had taught the now four year old Fenris how to write, how to manage some words, however simple. He considered this boy to be his closest friend. And just as he began to feel like a normal child, away from feeling like a street rat, a ravenous, rabid animal within the confines of the village and his family home, The Northern Clan's warriors arrived.The civil war had raged for eight years, and it was finally coming to a simmering end, almost anti-climatically. Up until this point, every clan conflict had been resolved with minimal bloodshed, no innocents caught in the midst of battle, yet the Southern Clans went too far. They started to pillage and burn down entire villages to support their war effort. They had formed an inquisition of sorts to hunt down believers of the Old Gods within their cities and homelands, and this enraged the Fylkir, who was the head of all clans underneath one unified banner.Once the Southern Clans had been pushed back and offered an unconditional surrender upon the end of the eighth year, investigations had already been done. It was time for justice to be served for the loss of life and the innocent bloodshed by rule of ancient law.The ruling was convened by the elders of the clans, and neither could agree. The Fylkir decided himself. He had command of his own group of elite warriors to specifically uphold ancient law and the new laws of the clan. They were the peacekeepers, the honor guard; however, they were not a police force. They had been hand selected and trained by the Fylkir for centuries, and the King had already decided his justice against the Eilífr Clan of the South. He had ordered it to be eradicated completely. The order had been issued ahead of time, so when the head of the Eilífr Clan, Hákon, would be told the punishment due, he would already be trapped within the jaws of the behemoth.And by eradication, the Fylkir had meant everything but the history pages. Members of the clan married off into other clans were to be silenced, along with any children, women, men, workers, and animals. Everything was to be wiped to ensure the clan would not persist in existence, but also to ensure an example of what would happen to any other clan that wished to try to rebel. Hákon would return to his estate for one final moment to witness the destruction of his clan before being killed in an extremely gruesome, almost ritualistic way himself.The Northern Clan's warriors had arrived in the relocated village where Fenris was living after the destruction of the clan. All of the extensions of the Fylkir needed to act quickly and swiftly, and so, it was time for the remaining Southern Clans and houses under those clans to atone for their treachery as well as show their loyalty to the Old Gods. This would be done by offering up their children for the pilgrimage, provided they were old enough. The mother and stepfather of Fenris offered him up almost instantaneously; however, this was their biggest mistake. They had offered him up to the Fylkir's kyndr, and hand, Ásbjörn Ulfr. When he witnessed what Fenris' parents had done to him, he ordered them to be executed nigh-instantaneously.Ásbjörn Ulfr, the hulking man, took Fenris to his side, looking into the boy's eyes. Fenris returned the eyes with a glare filled with pain and rage. It was decided then that Ásbjörn would adopt Fenris, raise him, and sponsor his pilgrimage; he would raise the boy to be his direct successor. The man who had lived close to four hundred years and not known a son, not even a wife, had chosen a boy from a village of traitors. He saw something in Fenris, or perhaps it was the Nornir weaving the strings of fate together as they should fall?The pilgrimage was a rite of passage for those who worshipped the Old Gods; every child and teenager who embarked on the journey would walk for several months along the mountains to the cave in the highest peak. They were left to fend for themselves, hunt for themselves. They were left to struggle and push forward without any supervision. Those who perished were considered to be unworthy of the blessing. This cycle consisted of six hundred children; however, due to the nature of the civil war's lasting nature, the pilgrimage had fallen upon the worst time it could have feasibly fallen upon.Many of the embarked were given armor, weapons, training, and gifts from their loved ones. Fenris was given armor too big for him, and a sword too heavy for his weak muscles and bones. The plan was to thin the herd in the pursuit of survival upon the fifth moon cycle. It was every man for themselves; they were all separated after months of blizzards, other natural disasters, and natural selection running its course.Upon the fifth moon cycle, the mountain peak lit up with a large pyre, and the echoes of drums were heard along the valley and mountain range of the Northern mountains. It was the signal of the warrior trials. The warrior trials were placed within the pilgrimage to ensure the survival of the fittest, to thin the herd. It was used to draw out a person's animalistic nature and push them to their limits. The embarked were to fight those to the death that they encountered. The ultimate goal was to survive; it was never a race.Fenris was alone, barely surviving off the land. He was too frightened to remove the armor from his person, to not use the sword. It didn't matter anyway; most were too heavy for him. Several days had passed, and Fenris was on the trail of another of his people. He understood the rules, but perhaps they had supplies? Perhaps they could barter and talk? Upon approaching their camp, he recognized a familiar shape, but the crunch of snow gave him away.He looked down at his foot and back up toward the silhouette. A blade was raised, flying through the air, and coming down like a hammer toward Fenris. He struggled to move. The oversized armor slowed and made his movements sluggish, but the icy slope made him fall backwards and off to the side, his heavy sword buried into the ground behind him, leaving his arms open.As the silhouette slipped down the slope as well, Fenris struggled to remove his sword from the landscape, eventually being able to bring it across toward the knee of the attacker, dropping him to a knee. Fenris was pulled off balance and toward the side, the clunky armor getting in his way, and he raised the sword, struggling to keep his balance. He threw his body forward to shift against the weight, cleaving downward into the attacker's shoulder, hitting the edge of the chainmail runoff from the helmet of his attacker, and throwing the helmet off into the snow, revealing his one and only friend's visage.He understood what he needed to do, however. There wouldn't be recovering from these wounds, and he wouldn't leave his friend to the elements; however, Fenris' choice would cause more suffering than leaving him to those elements. He pressed his body against the blade to push it deeper into the entry wound, using his weak strength to push down and thrust in a sawing motion diagonally. It took him almost an hour, or maybe longer, to completely saw through his compatriot. He fell back, sobbing and exhausted. He looked down at his bloody hands, the propped up sword against the rock wall, soaked in blood, steam rising off the fresh body and blood.Daggers filled his lungs as he breathed; it felt like icecicles were forming in his chest. He climbed up the slope in desperation, slipping through the piles of snow and ice, his only saving grace being the oversized armor digging into the softer pieces of ice, giving him leverage to climb up the slope into the encampment.As his nose hit downwind, the smell of the smoked meat on the fire filled his nostrils. It was raised high enough not to get charred in the time it took him to finish his fight. He immediately charged across, knocking over the apparatus holding up the food. He began to feast like a rabid animal, peeling the meat from the bone with his hands, covered in the rendered fat and grease, with soot from the char covering in between his fingers.He sat back, with a heavy sigh, only partially satiated as he looked around the camp, looking at the stockpile of dehydrated meat and smoked meat. He crawled back over to the slope, looking down at his mangled friend. His only friend, and then he went pale. He almost upchucked his meal, but managed to hold it down out of sheer willpower. He clambered down the slope to grasp onto the straps of the body to pull it up to the toAfter he had situated the body, he began to pull off the armor of the smaller male. Despite the sorrow and anger he felt at his actions. He lived. He had survived, and now he must continue, or this death would be wasted on the concept of potential. He inserted the panels of armor, repurposing what he could to fill the gaps or allow the larger armor pieces to fit snugly against his body. He sat back, looking up into the moonlight, and looked toward the blade he had used to slay his friend.He would not allow for any more suffering like that. It was time for him to hone his muscles, his mind, his instincts. He would sleep for this night, crawling into the lean-to and beginning his attempt at trapping and hunting the day after.Fenris spent the next few months training his body, living off of meat, and honing his instincts and hunting skills. He had previously used his friend's body to trap and hunt a predatory animal. However, this had also evolved into hunting his fellow people to further enhance his skills and abilities, but to also test them against others. Over the course of the several months he had spent training, building muscle, and hunting, his body weight had now been measured to be equivalent to his large build.His armor now bore the fur of the behemoth like canines around the area. A large and heavy cloak was made out of his first hunt. But now it was time to focus his movement toward the peak. By his estimate, it would already take a couple of years to reach it based on its distance and terrain, and other natural hazards.As time passed by, an aging Fenris had been completely adapted by the forest and the mountain, the strife, the struggle, and the natural world around him. He had finally reached the peak of the mountain top, entering the halls of the Old Gods, he was the fourth to arrive. The arrivals had been separated by months or even years.They welcomed him in; however, he was still borderline feral from his experiences, and he was distrustful of those of the temple. But the sight of food and drink, it distracted him, but it also allowed him to fall into a sense of security. He would then be subject to the ritual, where he would meet with his patron deities and understand the fundamentals of his purpose. He drank the brew for the ritual. During this, his body changed and almost mutated in a way to adjust to the blessings-- and curses he was given.Several more months passed after that instance, and Fenris found himself reunited with his adoptive father. He would spend the remainder of his childhood honing them, learning hobbies, traditions, and rituals of his clan. It was about learning how to control the animal within himself, learning to love and trust again.Fenris' teenage years were not filled with sorrow and rage like his childhood. It was generally a very happy time for him; this is where he would learn to forge his adjustable armor and his sword.He would encounter rune mages and learn from them how to enscribe runes, and even use them without enscribing them onto objects. This, over time, would prove to be a borderline fixation for him. He had never seen magic before, outside of the mystical arts of some of the religious rites, and had always figured that it would be something you could either obtain from a rite, or you had needed to be a priest.As time passed, and his way of life became more regular, his weapon training was handed over to a man named Torvald Jarfi, seeing as Fenris had progressed beyond even an above average swordsman. It was time for him to learn how to fight with his environment, and even without a blade, eventually bringing them together as a specific fighting style, built for and handled specifically by Fenris.Further on into his teenage years, it was time for both Fenris and his adoptive father to go on a hunting journey, seeking rare monsters throughout the land to cull them from overexpansion, and repurpose their materials for weapons, armor, clothing, and religious ordeals. They would not waste the beast.Fenris would be given a travel companion, an unnaturally large wolf. Horses, naturally, were animals of prey and could only assist in travel. Here, he would learn to listen to his instincts when nature called for them. It would teach him to watch for small details, for small tells of his animal companion, and to confide and trust in the animal. All of this led Fenris and his adoptive father into the nest of a beast.They had to be crafty with their approach; however, it was a fast beast and a strong beast. It broke through the trees, throwing splintering wood everywhere like shrapnel, kicking up snow like a fog, and separating the duo. Ásbjörn was battling the beast and being pushed back. Fenris got back up to assist in the attack, plunging his blade under the gap of its neck carapace and prying up and down until it was felled.After the battle had been won, Ásbjörn, mid praise to Fenris, would have a stroke and pass away from the strain of this battle. It was as brief as that. The procession for Ásbjörn's funeral was massive, bigger than anything Fenris had ever seen.A year passed, and Fenris would take over Ásbjörn's station, being his next of kin. He would answer to the eternal elders directly, and by proxy, be kyndr to the Fylkir.As Fenris came of age to embark on a journey to the outside world, one of the first in four hundred years, he volunteered. He left his homeland for Eorzea in an attempt to learn about the world.

  Fenris is a   very solitary person at his core. He speaks very matter-of-factly and extremely honestly without any real concealment of his emotions or intentions, and by proxy, is not generally very sociable at times. His hardships have strengthened his mind and his resolve beyond his originally very narrow outlook on life.As time passed, he began to harness and control his esteem. He began to become less hostile toward strangers and broaden his horizons, and by proxy, became more worldly and wise. While his presence is intimidating, getting to know him a bit better would prove that he's quite friendly, and enjoys talking about his homeland, his philosophy, and much more.18 LINES MAX. ᛋᚴᚢᚴᚴᛁ ⸺ Esteem's Temptation.

  The Esteem   serves as a juxtaposition of Fenris' exterior demeanor. It is a culmination of all of his negative emotions and influences, specifically rage, bloodlust, fear, and sorrow, all into one very real being. It's constantly growing stronger and gnawing into the mind of Fenris, attempting to take control like it did in his past. It has almost a mind of its own.As the Esteem began to take shape, it would tend to manifest itself as a many-eyed wolf, a subtle nod to Fenris' spiritual animal and general instinct. It started to properly take shape and manifest after the passing of his adoptive father; having no more grounding attachment to anything, it allowed very open and fresh wounds to fester. Fenris can be seen sometimes talking to himself, or brooding in silence if something pulls on the thread of his Esteem, as he often tries to regain control and stifle himself from unleashing into a blinding rage. Sadly, the Esteem is as much of a chain to Fenris as Fenris is to the esteem, and neither seems to understand as they battle for control, even in crucial moments.18 LINES MAX. DO NOT GO PAST IMAGES.

ᚼᚢᚴᚢᛦ ⸺ Psychology.

  Fenris is, by all means   a merit based person. He looks favorably towards having proof, or merit to back up one's words. Seeking demonstration of one's words and wisdom versus simply the tale of it, because in his extensive experience, those who speak more about what they can and want to do, often never have the action to back it up. He respects merit over status, often looking to those with more baseline experience in general or a specialized field for advice or to do a specialized task. If he makes a request of you, it's often because he respects your knowledge and experience of his request, and generally respects you as a person. By proxy, he is constantly observing those with said merit, making note of it, and storing it for later in case he has use of their expertise in a specific matter. In general, he wants someone to back up what they say, and their tales, and by proxy, he wants them to stay true to their word. He respects people who have mastered their craft, or even have reached the peak of what they can do, even if he, himself, has surpassed them. He often urges others to try new things and go beyond the bounds of an artificial limit they've placed on themselves, and even if they can't, he respects them all the same.In addition to this, Fenris is a man of his word. If he tells you he's going to do something, he's going to do it. It may not be in that moment, but it will happen. Oftentimes, he will also use this as a word of warning if buttons are being pressed, versus stating that he's getting angry or upset. By extension, he's a very honest person, a very direct person; however, this does not extend to his emotions.Fenris has an extremely hard time expressing his emotions and even himself at times. A mixture of common not being his first language, and the tendency to internalize everything. In general, he is an extremely docile and calm person. He's extremely hard to anger or upset, and will often brush off slights, the words of others, or people who he generally does not like, nor respect; However, when Fenris has been angered or upset by some chain of events, the words of another, being consistently misunderstood, or the general dislike of an individual, he will often bury this distaste as a way to stay his hand. It often builds up and will build pressure within as long as the issue persists, as he tries to fight, staying respectful and cordial to others. However, this pressure can eventually explode after sufficient buildup, and things can go from zero to one thousand extremely fast. You can often tell this is happening if he is silent for quite some time, provided he is not simply lost in thought.Fenris also has a baseline general expectation for the bare minimum in conversation, where a person is generally engaged and paying attention. He doesn't really mince words and expects the same courtesy from others. If he's going to spend his time in a prolonged conversation, he expects that time to be respected by someone else doing the same, and sharing the same kind of engagement. Because of his nature to not mince words, and the likelihood of being misunderstood since common is not his first language, if the way of conversation or words does not work, he will often resort to physicality or action, whether violent or not to get his intention or point across. This can often play a part in the aforementioned pressure as stated above. In general, he tries to stick to conversation, persuasion, or general understanding as a way to try to get rid of bad habits.He is entirely aware that he has a tendency to prefer strength and action over words, but since becoming a clan leader, he's become a bit more political and often sidelining an active nature. He does note, however, that action can have a place. He's found that those in Eorzea prefer a wise, compassionate, strong, and smart leader over just a strong and capable leader; in his homeland, strength allows a leader to gain the necessary experience needed to be one. He actively strives to improve old and bad habits in place for more positive and newer habits. This, by proxy, has made him more acutely aware of someone's demeanor and their words, often how they are feeling, or if they have anything on their mind, but his direct nature will often point it out, potentially leading to a point of education or contention.Fenris often carries a journal where he keeps a record of specific or memorable events, drawings, poetry, and other memorable moments throughout his journey. He, in general, is a very worldly person and likes to live in the moment and also to relive the moment later. Growing up with the Elders in his homeland made him very introspective, wise, and reflective as time progressed, and those tendencies had time to manifest. In addition, he's also extremely introverted around a lot of younger people. He is also very manual labor-oriented, preferring to do or make something himself versus hiring someone else to do it.He consistently is in the pursuit of knowledge about the world, its history, magic, and so forth. He constantly wants to learn new things, new cultures, new arts, and new hobbies. He's extremely accepting of such as well.
